Who was the father of Modern Yoga, Maharishi Patanjali?

Patanjali was a great spiritual guide from the past. He took the essence of the spiritual path and turned it into the Yoga Sutras, which are words of wisdom. He laid out the steps that every soul must take to get back to the unlimited life force. One story says that he fell from heaven in the form of a small snake into the hands of a woman named Anjali. He was then named Patanjali.

  • Life story

Almost nothing is known about Patanjali's life. It is full of stories and facts that don't match up. There are no clear facts about where or when Maharshi Patanjali was born. Patanjali's birth and death dates are different by a thousand years. Most scholars say he lived between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE, but others say he lived between the 4th and 7th centuries BCE. Maharishi Patanjali lived in Nepal, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, and many places in India. However, his works have been changed and added to in ways that make them hard to understand.

Matsya, Vayu, and Skanda Purana all talk about Patanjali, and they say that Maharishi Patanjali lived around the same time as Vyas and Panini. Rishis were very good at Yoga and could use its power to live for millennia. They could choose to live or die based on what they wanted. This is why there are still rishis in the world today. The Puranas say that rishis live for a long time, and Rishi Patanjali is one of those wise people.

Most researchers use the written copy of the Yoga Sutras to figure out when Patanjali lived. But Patanjali most likely lived a long time before that.

There are also tales about how he had spiritual powers and was born in a very strange way. In reality, no one understands much more about his life, including when he lived.  But we know him by what he did.

  • The incarnation of AdiShesha

People think that Maharishi Patanjali was the reincarnation of Vishnu's snake, Adishesha, who is Lord Vishnu's first ego expansion. Many old texts say that Patanjali was a reincarnation of Ananta Shesha, the king of the thousand-headed serpent. He is sometimes shown as being half man and half snake.

  • Patanjali's Yoga Sutra

People say that Patanjali was the one who wrote the Yoga Sutra. The story of where Yoga came from had been told orally for thousands of years, from ancient times. Yoga by Patanjali is one of the most well-known darshans in Hindu philosophy. Patanjali put together and organized information from many ancient traditions about Yoga. Classical Yoga Philosophy uses the Yoga Sutra as one of its main texts.

Maharishi Patanjali is thought to be the one who put together the Yoga Sutras and wrote the Mahabhasya, which is a commentary on Panini's Ashtadhyayi. The 196 Sanskrit sutras in the Yoga sutras are split into 4 chapters. Between 500 BCE and 200 BCE, people put together the yoga sutras. Patanjali's Yoga Sutra has four chapters. Each one is named after what it is about: Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada, and Kaivalya Pada.

  • Samadhi Pada: In the first chapter of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, called Samadhi Pada, Yoga is defined and its goal is explained. There are different ways to reach the goals of Yoga.

  • Sadhana Pada: Chapter 2 talks about how to get to the goals of Yoga practically. It also talked about a type of yoga named Ashtanga that has eight parts, or limbs.

  • Vibhuti Pada: It refers to the results, powers, and manifestations that come from doing Yoga.

  • Kaivalaya Pada: The route of devotion, the route of Karma, and the path of knowledge are all talked about in the last chapter of the Patanjali Yoga Sutra.

Some people also call Patanjali's yoga sutras Raja Yoga or the Royal Yoga.

Patanjali says that the significance of Yoga is to keep changes in the mind from happening. He has also authored Ayurvedic medicine. People think he didn't have many friends, which is why nothing is known about his life. But he will always be admired by the globe for penning really helpful books and introducing the world to the rich tradition of yoga.

The teachings of Patanjali are a deep and moving scripture. But it is also practical, easy to understand, and useful for any spiritual seeker. The Yoga sutra demonstrates the side route to unwavering happiness and freedom. It is a guide for performing yoga correctly, not merely another academic investigation.
