Goddess Brahmacharini is the second divine incarnation of Mata Durga and a highly popular divine being who bestows bountiful peace and wealth on her worshippers, as well as a life of perpetual development and happiness. The deity's name is revered, and
she is venerated as the second divine form of Goddess Durga on major occasions such as Navratri. In other words, Mata Brahmacharini's devotion begins on the second day of
Navratri, also known as the celebration of the nine glorious nights of Navdurga. Mata Brahmacharini appears as a celestial person dressed in white with a beaded rosary in
her right hand and a Kamandal in her left.

The Legend Concerning Mata Brahmacharini

Goddess Brahmacharini's origins may be traced back to many interpretations of mythical stories. One such story is about Mata Parvati, who decided to marry none other than Lord Shiva. Parvati's parents attempted to persuade her not to pursue her wish. Still, she had already made up her mind, so she remained in meditation for thousands of years until Lord Shiva was satisfied with her tenacity and dedication. Meanwhile, Lord Kamadeva was involved in another event. The gods asked him to entice Lord Shiva to like Parvati. The gods developed this plot to rouse Lord Shiva from his profound concentration so that he might slay Tarkasur, a demon who was protected by an immortality blessing until Lord Shiva destroyed him.

Unfortunately, Lord Kamadeva's plan did not succeed, and as a result, he was burned to ashes by Lord Shiva's third eye as a punishment for disturbing Shiva's concentration. So, despite the unexpected change of events, Parvati persisted in her efforts to reclaim Shiva. For this, she opted to reside in Lord Shiva's mountain home and partake in all of Shiva's pastimes. Her austere pursuit and commitment were ultimately understood as Brahmacharini's act. The same goodness softened Shiva's heart for Parvati. However, Shiva decided to put Parvati to the test once again and approached her in disguise, attempting in vain to persuade her not to marry Shiva. Suddenly, a demon named Prachandasur and his army of demons assaulted Parvati, who was on the verge of finishing her Tapasya. Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati joined the fight against the demons to save her. The battle between goddesses and demons lasted many days until a water-filled kamandal/utensil held beside contemplative Parvati collapsed. The water turned into a deadly downpour and swept away the army of demons. Prachandasur, the last man standing, was burnt to ashes by Parvati's third eye. Years of meditation gave her such celestial power and became known as Devi Parvati. Lord Shiva took her as his wife. As a result, the name Brahmacharini represents bachelorhood, while the color white represents purity.
