Devi Shailputri's Origins and Legends

Devi Shailputri's name is a combination of two words: "Putri" (daughter) and "Shaila" of the mountain. Devi Durga's first Avatar is Shailputri.

According to the Hindu Mythology tales she was the daughter of Parvat Raj Himalaya, the king of Himalaya King Daksha. She was his beloved daughter whom he named “Sati,” she was an ordinary princess and spent her life in a palace in comfort. It was during her adulthood when she fell in love with one of the Holy Trinity( Holy Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva), Lord Shiva. Her father king Daksha didn't think highly of him. It is said that during an assembly which is attended by several kings and gods, Lord Shiva didn't stand up to greet king Daksha, which inflicted on his ego so much that he started harboring a grudge against him. Ever since he hold it to him, which only grew after his beloved daughter wanted to marry someone whom he thinks lowly. He has views that Lord Shiva was an ascetic life on mountains. On his daughter's stubborn wish he married her off to Lord Shiva. Although he never fully accepted him. King Daksha once arranges a massive Yagya without inviting Lord Shiva and Sati. although Sati was adamant to accept that her father didn't invite her and asked Lord Shiva for his permission to attend that Yagya that his father had organized. Lord Shiva agreed although on arrival at the palace nobody besides Sati’s mother talk to her, her sisters were taunting her and giving away bad remarks about her and her husband Lord Shiva. Furthermore, Raja Daksha taunts Lord Shiva for his humble lifestyle and life without royalty. This all drove Sati into pain and trauma seeing everyone including her father insulting her husband, she jumped into the smoldering fire. She then takes birth in the Parvatraj Himalaya mansion and marries Lord Shiva as the incarnate of Sati known as Parvati.
Devi Shailputri also holds a Trishul (trident) in her right hand and a lotus in her left. She also rides a bull. She is the root chakra's Devi.
