One of four Navratri per year is Chaitra Navratri. The Hindu festival of Navratri holds a lot of significance for the Hindus, and it's celebrated with great zeal and dedication all over India. The Goddess Devi Durga is worshiped during the Navratri celebration, which lasts 9 nights and 10 days.

What is the meaning of Navratri?


The name Navaratri is made up of two words: 'Nav' means nine and 'Ratri' means night. This is a 10-day festival that lasts nine nights. The festival honors the triumph of light over darkness. During this festival, Goddess Durga, the emblem of Shakti or shear strength, is honored.

Navratri is celebrated 4 times a year, at the beginning of each season. Chaitra Navratri, Ashada Navratri, Sharad Navratri, and Pausha/Magha Navratri are the four Navratris. Amongst these, Chaitra Navratri in the Vasanth Ritu (spring season), as well as the Sharad Navratri in the Sharad Ritu (fall season), are significant and widely observed.

Navratri is celebrated to honor Goddess Durga. On these 9 days, the various incarnations or 9 forms of Goddess Durga, i.e Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Kaalratri, Katyayani, Mahagauri, and Siddhidhatri are worshipped.

Kalash Sthapana Puja for Chaitra Navratri


he festival starts with Kalash Sthapana on the 1st day of Navratri. This ritual signifies invoking or inviting or welcoming the Goddess at home, this is followed by puja, aarti, and fasting. There is a proper ritual for the sthapana which is as follows.

● After having a bath and purifying yourself and cleaning the area you plan to do the puja. Perform a Ganesh puja or chant Lord Ganesh’s mantra for easing the path, removing obstacles, and giving strength to complete the festival.

● Spread a red-colored cloth on a hardwood seat and sprinkle raw rice on it and place an idol or photo of Goddess Durga.

● Take some soil in an earthen pot, sprinkle water, and sow barley seeds on it.

● Place the Kalash with water and mango leaves on the soil mound and pour water.

● Take a coconut and wrap it with a holy string or roli and a red Chunari, then place it on top of Kalash to cover its mouth.

● Worship the deities by offering flowers.

● The Kalash Sthapana Puja brings health, money, and prosperity.

Fastingor Vrat during Chaitra Navratri


Fasting during Navratri holds a lot of importance. There are different ways of fasting depending on the faith and customs of the devotees. Devotees follow Nirjala i.e fast with our water, Phallar i.e intake of fruits, milk, and water. Onion and garlic are not used in meals during the nine days of the Navratri celebration. People who are fasting prefer to eat only certain foods that are permitted during Vrat.
