Among all these chakras and glands, there is this one gland responsible for controlling the energy and metabolism of our body. Metabolism is the process by which cells of our body break down food, extract energy out of it, and save some for later use. This breakdown process is known as the metabolism of an individual. That is the thyroid gland. Situated right behind the food pipe and in front of the larynx, these are butterfly-shaped glands, pink in color. Their secretion is two major hormones for our body, thyroxine, thyroid stimulating hormone, and triiodothyronine.

One of the most essential and sensitive endocrine glands is the thyroid gland. Because it reacts quickly to stress, the global prevalence of hypothyroidism is increasing fast.


Hypothyroidism


An underactive thyroid, often known as hypothyroidism, is the most prevalent thyroid condition, affecting around 6% to 10% of women. Hashimoto's autoimmune illness is the most pervasive cause of primary hypothyroidism.

An underactive thyroid is a Kapha disorder, according to Ayurvedic principles. The characteristics of Kapha are heavy and sluggish, which correspond to the symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Slow metabolism, also known as Amanda Agni, is typical among Kapha people and those with a Kapha imbalance.

Hypothyroidism is also notorious for its impact on the menstrual cycle. It inhibits the menstrual cycle in negative ways. A person suffering from it may experience a delayed cycle, leap in cycles, and heavy or light flow during cycles.

Treatment suggested by Ayurveda.


  • Avoid the use of processed foods and starchy goods: Ayurveda is strictly against consuming food that is high in starch content as it makes your hypothyroidism even worse. Due to high starchy food, the body is exposed to a high amount of starch. When starch is converted into simple sugar during that process, insulin is released, which inhibits the call for more thyroid stimulating hormones, which results in disturbing the whole need and supply balance of hormones of the body if a person already has an imbalance of thyroid gland.

  • Eating up greens: Including more green vegetables in the diet can help with hypothyroidism. As greens that are also known as cruciferous vegetables, are rich in various macro-micronutrients and contain a high amount of fiber and vitamins. When a person takes a diet that is high in fiber and vitamins, it helps in better absorption of the medicine that controls the excess thyroxine hormone in the body. 

  • Eating lean protein: Lean proteins are the best friend of someone suffering from hypothyroidism. Lean protein that can be found in low-fat cottage cheese, whey, chicken breast, fish, yogurt, beans, french beans, tofu, and peanut butter. Iodine and omega 3 and 6 found in the lean protein help in better absorption of the iodine that helps a person better regulate thyroid-related activity. A person suffering from hypothyroidism will be in need to have a balanced diet with a good amount of omega-fatty acid in their body. Lean protein that helps in regulating the blood pressure of the person and also delivers good cholesterol that doesn't accumulate like bad cholesterol and also helps the system.

  • Enough vitamin D: Getting enough vitamin D is one of the necessities for every individual, but for people suffering from hypothyroidism, vitamin D plays a vital role in their hormone regulation. Their mood gets better, which helps them to work more efficiently in a productive way. Individuals should expose themselves to early morning and evening sunlight for better absorption of sunlight by the body. Exercise under sunlight will boost their immune system and calcium regulation during metabolic activity. 

  • Consuming detox: Detoxing once a body of heavy metals and chemicals is an essential process that has become vital for hypothyroidism. Using water from a copper vessel that is infused with copper ions will help detox due of the body. The process by which this infusion happens is known as the Oligodynamic Effect.
    Besides this, consuming water that is overnight kept with chia seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, or onion seeds also proves beneficial.
