The Nakshatra can be translated to mean "Sky Map" which is an accurate interpretation of what it truly is. Using the phrase "Star Map" might seem a bit confusing at first and this is because "Naksha" means 'map' or 'vision' while "Tara" means the star or constellation. The ancient Indian seers viewed 27 constellations and not the 12-star signs as a means to map out the night sky.
The Ancient Hindu sages divided the zodiac into 27 Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra covers 13 degrees, 20 minutes. The use of Nakshatras is very important in Vedic astrology. The Vimshottari Dasha system or cycle is based on each person's birth star and its associated constellation as well as its position relative to the rest of the planets in one's horoscope.

Each Nakshatra has four quarters that correspond to certain kinds of karma that people experience over their lifetime due to the placement of celestial bodies in those quarters programmed into our Vedic Birth Chart.
In astrology, each zodiac sign is related to not only a constellation but also to an element. Each zodiac sign contains at least one planet that has a special place within it called its “Janma Nakshatra.” In Sanskrit, Janma means “birth” while Nakshatra means “constellation.” The word Janma Nakshatra refers to the constellations into which planets are born. The Moon travels through a Nakshatra in a day. It takes Saturn approximately 27 years to transit through all 12 Janma Nakshatras while it takes Jupiter approximately 9 years and Mercury approximately 3 years.
The 27 Nakshatras are divided into three broad categories of 9 each as follows:
Dev Gana: They are angel-like, subtle, and refined.
Manushya Gana: Manushya means humans. They are just human and act accordingly.
Rakshas Gana: A person born under this Gana is not a demon, but likely to possess a gross and crude attitude to some extent.
