Curriculum

Although Hindu learning was an element of Buddhist study, Buddhist learning received more attention. At the time, both systems were working hand in hand. The teaching was entirely based on oral presentations and discussions, with annual tests. The ancient education system emphasized disciplines like defense, military, politics, and religion.

Methods of Learning


Teachers at the period paid close attention to their students and tailored their lessons to their knowledge and ability levels. Orals and debates were the primary means of instruction, and the following were used:

  • Because books were not available at the time, students developed the habit of learning and memorizing everything given in class, and teachers assisted them in this effort.

  • Students used to dive deeper into the concepts taught by their teachers and experiment with innovative ways of learning them.

  • Listening, contemplation, and intense contemplation were some of the new directions to investigate the learning process.

  • To teach the students, the teachers used storytelling techniques.

  • Students used to ask questions concerning the subjects that the professors were teaching, and these topics were then debated and the students' questions were answered.
